Here’s a great version of the wonderful Merle Haggard tune:
The guitarist/lead singer is on fire. The dialogue he has with his singing and his guitar is outstanding. What’s more: They’re all plainly just having a lot of fun performing this.
Needless to say, there’s a message in it that I like too (at about 2:36 in to the song):
Hey, hey, workin’ man
Workin’ man like me
I ain’t never been on welfare
And that’s one place I won’t be
‘Cause I keep on workin’
Long as these two hands are fit to use…
I have to admit that I don’t like the vignettes throughout the video. I just want to watch the musicians as they play. I’m a guitarist too, and I like to learn new things from other outstanding guitarists.
This guy, Albert Cummings, is an outstanding guitarist. The recording is a live performance, and has that live quality that’s sometimes sketchy, sometimes exciting, and in this case, really well-done.
