If you ever think the Irish don’t do some beautiful things… this is just a few minutes of calm, graceful, homespun loveliness.
Half the fun is to listen to the glorious Irish accents in the conversation after the song. “How’re ye, lads?!? Gud job as always. Mixin’ together two crackin’ songs!”
I’ve always loved this song — and a whole bunch of other songs from this area of the world.
There’re occasional moments of pitchiness in the vocal solo, but I find it adds to the quaint sweetness of it. I love the contemplative, sometimes plaintive flute as it comes in and out and adds something just about perfect.
This is a song built for harmony, and I find myself discovering new ones all the times while singing along.
Here’s another wonderful version of it. This Scottish folk duo, The Corries, manages to persuade the crowd to join in, and I’ve always loved that.
